There is a secret society.

About 95% of women are members of this society. About 10% of men are too, many of them gay.

It's an equal-opportunity society: Race and ethnicity are mostly irrelevant.

This society has no logo or name, no membership list, no meetings, no secret handshake.

However, members of the society will instantly recognize each other within 5 minutes of conversing. Members "get it" and non-members don't.

The primary goal of the society is to ensure the emotional well-being of its members.

When a non-member (such as most straight males) comes into contact with a member (such as most females) the non-member is intimidated. He has a vague inkling that he's talking to a member of a secret society whose rules he can only begin to imagine.

That's why the guy in the bar was surprised that a girl would try to talk to him. Usually, it's the non-member who tries to chat up a member, in hopes of joining a secret society whose existence he can sense.

Most men (and some women) will never "get it." They will never become members of the secret socety.

That's the real caste system of the 21st century.

If you want to see the sheer power of magnetism in action, rent The Thomas Crown Affair (the 1999 version) and watch Rene Russo dance with Pierce Brosnan.

I offered $50 on Google Answers to anyone who could find me the music they dance to; I'm still looking.
